Glueck ist…

Der “offizielle Musikclip” zum Lied Himmel Auf der Band Silbermond ist schon etwas älter, aber er gefällt mir gut, denn er regt zum Nachdenken an.

From website to “bundle of knowledge and expertise”

by Martin · May 20, 2012

More than anything else we had to shift our own thinking, because that was constraining with how you do things on mobile. Realizing that TPM is not a website — it’s a bundle of knowledge and expertise and ongoing coverage that exists inherently on no particular platform, and we are consitently trying to find ways to make it adaptable on as many platforms as possible.

Talking Points Memo publisher Josh Marshall in When is a website not a website, Nieman Journalism Lab, May 17, 2012

This shift in thinking will happen within more and more news organizations, and is important to understand for anybody who publishes content online.

Short documentary about influencers

by Martin · May 12, 2012

INFLUENCERS is a short documentary that explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion and entertainment. The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.

This is the description of a short documentary created by R+I Creative. I missed it when it was released a year ago. Well worth watching.

Articles of Note – March 10

by Martin · Mar 10, 2012

  • In the age of big data, data journalism has profound importance for society
‘We’re living in a data-driven culture,” said DeBarros. “A data-savvy journalist can use the Twitter API or a spreadsheet to find news as readily as he or she can use the telephone to call a source. Not only that, we serve many readers who are accustomed to dealing with data every day — accountants, educators, researchers, marketers. If we’re going to capture their attention, we need to speak the language of data with authority. And they are smart enough to know whether we’ve done our research correctly or not. As for news apps, they’re important because — when done right — they can make large amounts of data easily understood and relevant to each person using them.’

  • Why Don’t We Read About Architecture?
‘Architecture, writes Lange, “is the art you cannot avoid” and it carries a burden that the other arts don’t — it must reconcile aesthetics and ideas with user functionality. A painting or a novel need only please or provoke its audience; it doesn’t then also require setbacks, parking minimums and LEED certification. Fewer of us are affected — or even in regular contact with the other arts — while all of us are inextricably connected to the built environment.’
  • How to create and edit articles for Wikipedia
‘Ironically for a user-generated content site, Wikipedia looks down on user-generated content. Blogs can be a reliable source if the blogger is notable for something other than blogging.’
